{"id":4125,"date":"2026-03-02T18:10:11","date_gmt":"2026-03-02T17:10:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.oerlemansplastics.nl\/en\/pfas_standard\/"},"modified":"2026-03-02T18:10:11","modified_gmt":"2026-03-02T17:10:11","slug":"pfas_standard","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.oerlemansplastics.nl\/en\/pfas_standard\/","title":{"rendered":"PFAS Packaging Standard"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"hh-block block-row\"data-mb=\"regular\">\n    <div class=\"block-row__row row block-row__row--preset-1\/2|1\/2 block-row__row--align-stretch\">\n                \n\n<div class=\"hh-block block-column col col--1 col--lg-1\/2\">\n    \n<p class=\"hh-block block-paragraph block-paragraph--id-69da335660dbc\"data-mb=\"small\"><strong>PPWR<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"hh-block block-paragraph block-paragraph--id-69da335660e7c\"data-mb=\"small\">On January 22, 2025, the European Union published the final version of <a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/EN\/TXT\/HTML\/?uri=OJ:L_202500040\">Regulation (EU) 2025\/40 on packaging and packaging waste (PPWR)<\/a>. This new regulation, which entered into force on February 11, 2025, plays a central role in Europe\u2019s transition toward a circular economy.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"hh-block block-paragraph block-paragraph--id-69da335660fa6\"data-mb=\"small\">PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are defined in this regulation as chemical substances containing at least one fully fluorinated methyl group (\u2013CF\u2083) or methylene group (\u2013CF\u2082\u2013). This means that the relevant carbon atom is bonded exclusively to fluorine atoms, without hydrogen (H), chlorine (Cl), bromine (Br), or iodine (I). This specific structure makes PFAS highly persistent in the environment.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"hh-block block-paragraph block-paragraph--id-69da33566101f\"data-mb=\"small\">To better manage the risks associated with PFAS use, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) will soon publish the consolidated opinion of both the Committee for Risk Assessment (RAC) and the Committee for Socio-economic Analysis (SEAC). These opinions will form an important basis for further decision-making regarding potential PFAS restrictions within the European Union.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"hh-block block-paragraph block-paragraph--id-69da3356610a0\"data-mb=\"small\">Article 5 of the regulation addresses requirements for substances in packaging, with article 5 specifically focusing on the use of PFAS in packaging. The PPWR prohibits the use of PFAS in packaging that comes into contact with food unless concentrations remain below the established limit values. Companies are required to demonstrate, through technical documentation, that their packaging complies with requirements for both heavy metals, PFAS and substances of concern. During these tests, the level of total organic fluorine (TOF) was measured. The measured values remain below 30 ppm \u2014 well under the permitted 50 ppm limit for PFAS in polymeric form.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"hh-block block-paragraph block-paragraph--id-69da33566972a\"data-mb=\"small\">This demonstrates that our packaging complies with the requirements of the PPWR. An full-fledged declaration confirming these test results has been prepared and is available to customers upon request.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"hh-block block-paragraph block-paragraph--id-69da3356697df\"data-mb=\"small\">Although OPACKGROUP currently complies with the regulation, further development towards PFAS-free alternatives remains a key priority. Replacing PFAS-containing processing aids \u2014 which are essential in certain production processes \u2014 continues to present technical challenges.
